Everyone needs good neighbours
Good neighbours became good friends, as more than 150 residents joined together for a series of street parties in York to celebrate Neighbours Day.
York Housing Association organised the events on Tuesday 26 May in Bismarck Street off Leeman Road, and in the Navigation Road area of York.
Bouncy castles, face painting, dance competitions and quizzes were just some of the activiites on offer, and neighbours were also able to enjoy some food together.
"European Neighbours Day is aimed at encouraging good neighbourliness to last all year round" said Kate Spencer, our Operations Director.
"By encouraging the residents of a block of flats or street to share a cup of tea and a chat, Neighbours' Day encourages better relationships, solidarity and tolerance among those who live in close proximity to each other".
"We would like to reintroduce the idea of neighbours looking out for each other. In cities, today, this spirit of co-operation has often been replaced by indifference, which can lead to loneliness or distrust".
"Neighbours' Day is a great initiative that provides excellent opportunities to break down bariers. This year, the project focused on friendship and solidarity - values which are shared by all cultures, whatever their race, religious belief or polical convictions".
More than 8.5 million other neighbours in 29 countries around Europe celebrated Neighbours' Day by holding street parties in their communities.
